| Pat Head Summitt, head coach of the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteer basketball team, raises the bar in the collegiate basketball world every time she steps out on the court. Now entering her 35th season at the helm of the Lady Vols in 2008-09, Summitt's latest edition will be defending bookend back-to-back NCAA titles from the 2007 and 2008 seasons, as well as helping their coach in her quest to secure her 1000th career win in 2009. ... The incomparable Summitt has built collegiate basketball's "hoopdom" at Tennessee. A program developed tirelessly, diligently and successfully by Summitt, her staff and the 153 student-athletes who have been fortunate enough to don the Orange & White jerseys of the Tennessee Lady Volunteers for over three decades. ... Summitt, the all-time winningest coach in NCAA basketball history (men or women) with 983 victories, enters her latest campaign with eight NCAA Championships. As the Lady Vols ran through the 2008 tournament, the pundits favored everyone but the Lady Vols to win the national title. Summitt and her underdogs reigned as "big dogs" once again bringing home an eighth NCAA basketball title to Knoxville after defeating #6/5-ranked LSU in the semis, 47-46 on a buzzer-beater bucket, and overwhelming #4-ranked Stanford in the championship game, 64-48. ... A brief synopsis of Summitt's resume goes like this: A consummate taskmaster, she has kept her elite program in the winner's circle for over three decades, producing a mind-boggling record of 983-182 (.843). During her tenure, the Lady Vols have won eight NCAA titles, as well as 27 Southeastern Conference tournament and regular season championships. Tennessee has made an unprecedented 27 consecutive appearances in the NCAA Sweet 16 and produced 12 Olympians, 19 Kodak All-Americans named to 33 teams, and 71 All-SEC performers. Along with the success on the court, Summitt's student-athletes have tremendous productivity in the classroom. Coach Summitt has a 100 percent graduation rate for all Lady Vols who have completed their eligibility at Tennessee. |
