Tennessee’s post depth took a hit Monday with the announcement that forward Faith Dupree would be sidelined for the season because of lower back pain. The freshman had been bothered by back spasms and a decision was made to spend this season working on her core strength and flexibility off the floor so that she would be healthy on the court next year. Tennessee used its practice session Friday to put in some new looks on offense and defense and will travel to Virginia on Saturday to go over its scouting report at the Cavaliers’ arena before Sunday afternoon’s game in Charlottesville. The Lady Vols also have piped in crowd noise at practice this week in anticipation of loud venues for the next two games. Full Story

When Taber Spani walked to the sideline during a timeout in the Texas Tech game in San Antonio, she smiled at an assistant coach and said, “I am going to make my next shot.” Spani had struggled from the field – and inexplicably for her from the free throw line – but she took a gunslinger’s mentality back onto the court and drained her next shots to lead all scorers for the game. Glory Johnson is likely to occupy two different parts of the basketball court at times this season – in the paint on offense and on the perimeter on defense. Her directions from the coaching staff have been specific – under control around the basket with the ball, aggressive when the opponent has possession – and, so far, the sophomore forward has adjusted to the demands. The first AP poll of the 2009-10 season was unveiled Friday, and the voters selected Tennessee at No. 8. On the one hand, it’s the Lady Vols’ lowest ranking to open a season since 1985 when they debuted at No. 9.
